Daily Prayer - 2020-07-31

Presence

"Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, may your spirit guide me to seek
Your Loving presence more and more.
For it is there I find rest and refreshment from this busy world.

Freedom

What most often stops me achieving freedom is my tendency
to be caught up in fears and expectations
about what I 'ought' or 'should' be.
My usual automatic responses tie me down
and inhibit me from exploring new areas of growth.
I ask and pray for a greater sense of inner freedom and
that I might reach the fresh and challenging possibilities
that God wishes me to realise.

Consciousness

As I talk to you, O God,
help me to grow in appreciation of the gifts of communication.
Grant that I will speak out for those who have no voice
and always have a kind word for those in need.

The Word of God

Matthew 13:54-58

Jesus came to his hometown and began to teach the people in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?" And they took offence at him. But Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honour except in their own country and in their own house." And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • The people of Nazareth were so sure they knew everything about Jesus that they were not ready to be surprised by his novelty. That is always a risk, even for me. I might find myself resisting his presence in new areas of my life, or his challenges to some of my relationships, or to my attitudes to what is happening in the Church and in the world around me. I ask for an open heart, for the willingness to know Jesus ever better so that I may love him more and follow him more closely.
  • Today is the feast of Ignatius of Loyola, the author of the book of the Spiritual Exercises and the founder of the Jesuits (who run this website). He liked to speak of himself as the Pilgrim, always searching for God’s will for him, and growing in his ability to find God in all things. Through the intercession of this saint, I ask for real inner freedom that I too may become more sensitive and open to God’s loving presence in my life and in the world around me.

Conversation

May your Holy Spirit guide me
In all my dealings with others.
May I use the gift of speech with kindness.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
